Abstract
Based on the reports of Central Film Commission which were prepared between 1939 and 1950, the present study attempts to explore a relatively untrodden field and problematizes the close relationship between film translation, state patronage and ideology in early republican Turkey. It reveals that imported films were appropriated to the ideological and political dispositons of the era by means of translation, which may well be defined as ‘resaying’ in the field of cinema. It becomes apparent that translation practices in the repertoire of cinema were both the object and instrument of the cultural planning of the era. Providing examples from the reports, the study claims that film control commissions as the representatives of the state patronage, guided on the hows of translation and, with the definitions and suggestions they gave, shaped the ‘poetics’ of film translation.
