Abstract

Hagia Sophia was an important place of worship for two major world religions, Christianity and Islam, and it also formed a very important part of the social and political life in the capital of two major civilizations, both the East Roman Byzantine and the Ottoman. Conquerors usually damage religious structures and remains within newly conquered territories and, for this reason they also destroy their own past. The depiction and illustration of these destroyed, or no longer usable monumental buildings and remains, are mainly known today from written sources. However, in the case of Hagia Sophia the Ottomans protected the building through converting it into a mosque and consequently it has survived down to the present day. Hagia Sophia has been one of the most important places of worship for both Christian and Islamic believers over the past one and a half millennia. Hagia Sophia was also very important for the Kievan Rus, members of the Orthodox Church and who had friendly ties with the East Roman Church and State. Although travel books and itineraries produced by and for the Orthodox Russian travellers contain much important and valuable information concerning Hagia Sophia, this material has to date not been researched in a thorough and detailed manner. To address this deficiency, this article relates the information concerning Hagia Sophia contained in Russian travel books and stories from the 13th through to the 18th centuries. Further, it is worth noting that these works in Russian also contain very important information concerning aspects of the Middle Ages.
