A Brief History of Herzegovina Before the Ottoman Empire

Abstract
Currently Herzegovina constitutes a part of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. İn fact, the size of the Herzegovina is not limited to today’s borders. Before the reign of the Ottomans, the region, known as Herzegovina, has a strecth from the Drina River to the Adriatic Sea. Before the creation of the Bosnian kingdom, the subject matter of the Hersek administration was discussed. İn German language, it is the name of feudal lord who rules the region as it is known that herzog, voyvoda or duke. This article focuses on the relations of the important feudal lords (landowners) which are governing Herzegovina with the royal family and sectarian conflicts in the Bosnian kingdom are emphasized.
Özet
Hersek, bugünkü Bosna Hersek Cumhuriyeti’nin bir kısmını oluşturmaktadır. Hersek’in büyüklüğü aslında bugünkü sınırlarından ibaret değildir. Osmanlılara geçmeden önce Hersek olarak bilinen bölge, Drina nehrinden Adriyatik Denizi’ne kadar uzanan yeri içermektedir. Bosna krallığı kurulmadan önce Hersek yönetiminin kime ait olduğu konusu ele alınmıştır. Hersek Almanca “herzog”, yani voyvoda veya dük anlamına gelen “Hersek” adı bilindiği kadarıyla bölgeyi yöneten bir derebeyinin unvanıdır. Bu makalede Hersek’i idare eden önemli derebeylerinin (toprak sahipleri) kraliyet ailesiyle ilişkileri ve Bosna krallığındaki mezhep çatışmaları üzerinde durulmuştur.
