Abstract
Child abuse and neglect are defined as the presence of non-accidental injuries as a result of physical assault or failure to protect of the child by the caregiver which causes disorders in the physical, social-emotional or sexual development of the child. This is a problem that most of the cultures in the world -including our country- has to face. There are three types of child maltreatment identified as physical, emotional and sexual abuse. All types of maltreatment cause behavioral, emotional and social problems and they have negative effects on child development. These problems have medical, judicial, psychological and social dimensions with a dramatic end. To protect the new generations and to provide the healthy development of the society a multi-dimensional approach should be embraced and enforced. With this point of view child maltreatment, types of child abuse, the prevalence of it, its effects on the child, juridical dimensions and preventions are discussed in this article.

Çocuk istismarı ebeveynlerin ya da çocuğa bakmakla yükümlü olan yetişkinlerin kaza dışında bir nedenle çocuğun fiziksel, duygusal ve cinsel gelişimini engelleyecek, beden ve ruh sağlığına zarar verecek şekilde davranmasıdır. Gerek dünyada gerekse ülkemizde önemli bir sorun olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Çocuk istismarı fiziksel, duygusal ve cinsel istismar olmak üzere üç grupta incelenmektedir. İstismarın her türü, çocuğun gelişim sürecini olumsuz etkilemekte davranışsal, duygusal ve sosyal sorunlara neden olmaktadır. Çok sayıda nedeni ve trajik sonuçları olan istismar olgusu tıbbî, hukukî ve psiko-sosyal bir sorundur. Gelecek nesillerin korunması, toplumların sağlıklı bir şekilde gelişebilmesi için sorunun bireysel ve toplumsal boyutta ele alınması, çocuk istismarını önleme yaklaşımlarının geliştirilmesi ve uygulanması gerekmektedir. Bu düşünceden hareketle çalışmada çocuk istismarı, türleri, yaygınlığı, yasal boyutu, çocuk üzerindeki etkileri ve önleme çalışmaları hakkında bilgi verilmiştir.
