Supporting and Training Course Teachers’ Opinions on Sample Mathematics Questions of the High School Entrance Exam

Liselere Geçiş Sınavının Örnek Matematik Sorularına Dair Destekleme ve Yetiştirme Kursu Matematik Öğretmenlerinin Görüşleri

Abstract

In the academic year 2017-2018, the examination of the TEOG, implemented in order to place secondary school students in high schools, was modified and the LGS system was introduced. This new system, along with many innovations, has brought remarkable changes in the way of questions. In this study, it was aimed to determine the opinions of the mathematics teachers who took part in the support and training course on the change in the exam through the sample mathematics questions published by the Ministry of National Education. 16 mathematic teachers participated in the study. The data obtained from this research carried out by employing case study method, a qualitative research approach, were analysed using content analysis method. According to the data, teachers stated that the sample questions were more differentiating than the TEOG questions, and by the help of the revised examination system students could be trained in a way that would enable them to comment on and use the information, rather than memorizing it. However, it was also stated that the rapid occurrence of this change raised the anxiety level of the students and their parents, caused a loss of motivation and drove middle and lower level students to despair.

Özet

2017-2018 eğitim öğretim yılında, ortaokul öğrencilerini liselere yerleştirmek amacıyla uygulanan TEOG (Temel Öğretimden Orta Öğretime Geçiş) sınavında değişiklik yapılarak Liseye Geçiş Sınavı (LGS) sistemine geçilmiştir. Bu yeni sistemde, birçok yenilikle birlikte soru tarzlarında da dikkate değer değişiklikler olmuştur. Araştırmada, Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı tarafından yayınlanan ve LGS’de sorulması planlanan, örnek matematik soruları ve yeni sınav sistemi hakkında destekleme ve yetiştirme kursunda görev alan matematik öğretmenlerinin görüşlerinin tespiti amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmaya 2017-2018 eğitim öğretim yılında Kastamonu ilinde bulunan 10 ortaokuldan toplam 16 matematik öğretmeni katılmıştır. Nitel araştırma yaklaşımlarından durum çalışması yöntemiyle yürütülen bu araştırmayla elde edilen veriler içerik analizi yöntemiyle analiz edilmiştir. Buna göre, öğretmenler örnek soruların TEOG sorularına göre daha ayırt edici olduğunu, yenilenen sınav sistemiyle ezbercilikten uzak, yorum yapabilen ve bilgiyi kullanabilen öğrenciler yetiştirilebileceğini söylemişlerdir. Ancak bu değişimin hızlı bir şekilde olmasının, öğrenci ve velide kaygı düzeyini yükselttiğini, motivasyon kaybı oluşturduğunu, orta ve düşük seviyedeki öğrencileri umutsuzluğa sevk ettiğini belirtmişlerdir. Araştırma sonuçları doğrultusunda, öğretmenlere, öğrencilerin üst düzey düşünme becerilerini geliştirmek ve derse olan ilgilerini artırmak amacıyla derslerde ve kurslarda farklı etkinlikler uygulamaları tavsiye edilmiştir. Ayrıca öğretmenlerin üst düzey düşünme becerilerini ölçme ve değerlendirme becerilerini geliştirmek amacıyla hizmet içi faaliyetler düzenlenebileceği düşünülmektedir.
