THE EFFECT OF INSTRUCTION BASED ON COOPERATIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT SUPPORTED WITH WORKSHEETS ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIVEMENT

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the effects of using concept cartoon supported worksheets along with jigsaw technique on students’ understanding of the “Clean Energy Resources” topic. A quasi-experimental research design was utilized in the study. The study was conducted with two groups and a total of 65, 10th grade students including a treatment group (N=33) and a control group (N=32). In the control group, lessons were performed with the prescribed teaching methods in the program while worksheets and jigsaw technique was used in experimental group. The data collection tools of the study were consisted of an achievement test, worksheets filled by the students and reflective journals kept by the teacher. The achievement tests were administered to all participants as pre- and post-test. In order to compare the students’ achievements between treatment and control groups, SPSS statistical packet program was run. The students’ worksheets and the teacher’s journals were analyzed descriptively. A significant difference was found between post-test achievements scores in favor of treatment group even though there is no significant difference between pre-test achievement scores of the groups. The data gained from the achievement test were supported with the data gained from the worksheets and the reflective journals. It is argued that the use of worksheet with a concept-cartoon and jigsaw technique for “Clean Energy Sources” had a positive effect on the students’ understanding of the topic.

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı Kimya Dersi 10. Sınıf “Endüstride ve Canlılarda Enerji” ünitesinde yer alan “Temiz Enerji Kaynakları” konusunun öğretiminde kavram karikatürü destekli çalışma yaprakları ve işbirlikli öğrenme yöntemine dayalı ayrıl-birleş (jigsaw) tekniğinin kullanımının, öğrencilerin akademik başarıları üzerine etkisini belirlemektir. Araştırmada kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel yöntem tasarımı kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini 33’ü deney, 32’si kontrol grubunda olmak üzere toplam 65, 10. sınıf öğrencisi oluşturmaktadır. Kontrol grubunda, programda öngörülen öğretim yöntemleri ile dersler yürütülmüş, deney grubunda ise işbirlikli öğrenme çerçevesinde çalışma yaprağı desteği ile dersler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmada veri toplama aracı olarak başarı testi, çalışma yaprakları ve öğretmenin tuttuğu yansıtıcı günlükler kullanılmıştır. Başarı testi her iki gruba çalışmadan önce ön-test, çalışma bittikten sonra ise son-test olarak uygulanmıştır. Elde edilen nicel verilerin analizinde SPSS istatistik paket programı kullanılmıştır. Çalışmadan elde edilen bulgular, deney grubunun, kontrol grubuna kıyasla daha başarılı olduğunu göstermiştir. Yansıtıcı günlükler incelendiğinde, çalışma yaprağı ve ayrıl-birleş tekniğinin birlikte kullanımının öğrenciler tarafından ilgi ve heyecanla karşılandığı görülmüştür. Çalışmadan elde edilen bulgulara dayalı olarak kimya dersinde kavram karikatürünün de yer aldığı çalışma yaprağı ve ayrıl-birleş tekniğinin birlikte kullanımının öğrencilerin temiz enerji kaynakları konusunu anlamaları üzerinde olumlu bir etkisi olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.
