Abstract
Cilicia was always at the first plan with the sea and seamanship activities during the antiquity. Many of known sea battles and trade connections did happen at the coast of Clicia or at least related to Cilicia in the history of Mediterranean. Some important discoveries have been carried out on this subject since 2015. One of them is a great shipyard which is found in the east of the Rough Cilicia region on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, 276 slipways were found on Dana Island. This island is located 2.300 metres from the shores of the Silifke District of Mersin Province. On the island, there are also a great number of different building remains behind these slipways. Among the surviving structures are at least three chuches, a bath, more than a hundred cisterns, various workshops/mils, with the majority being building groups which couldn’t be identified, dated to the 2nd-6th centuries AD. Masonry tecniques that can be probably dated to the Iron Age have been seen in some structures whose function has not been fully understood yet. There are traces which show multiple uses in building remains, located both in the slipways and behind the slipways. The surface materials were dated to the Romen and Eartern Roman period. The information obtained gives rise to the thought that the structure of the shipyard here may have been in uninterrupted use from the Iron Age until the Eastern Roman period. This shipyard will be compared to the other known examples during the presentation.
Özet
Doğu Akdeniz’in göbeğinde yer alan Kilikya Bölgesinde bilinen en erken örneklerinden başlayarak denizciliğin birçok örneğinin uygulanmış olduğu görülebilmektedir. Neolitik dönemde, henüz Akdeniz’in bilinen kıyı şeridinin oturmamış olduğu binyıllardan itibaren insanların ilkel teknelerle Anadolu Kıyılarından Kıbrıs’a ulaştıkları kazı sonuçlarından bilinmektedir.
