Education and Educational Institutions In the District of Alaşehir In the Mid 19 th Century

Abstract
With the proclamation of Tanzimat reform, it has emerged as a necessity for the Ottoman empire to carry out a new educational reform in parallel with the modernization efforts. This was because the success of the reforms carried out on the administrative, financial and military fields would be undertaken by a trained bureaucratic staff stationed there. The government that was not pleased with the madrasahs and Ottoman elementary-primary school under the strong influence of the religious hierarchy had the only resort to found modern educational institutions like primasy, secondary and high schools. This study provides information about the madrasahs in the center of the Alaşehir district and the number of teachers and students in educational institutions that belonged to Muslims and non-muslims. Also, this study aims to reveal the impact of the education reforms in Alaşehir from the Tanzimat reform to the Second Constitutional Era particularly in the light of related documents in the Ottoman archive and periodicals.
Özet
Tanzimat Fermanı’nın ilanı ile birlikte Osmanlı Devleti’nde modernleştirme çabalarına paralel olarak yeni bir eğitim reformu gerçekleştirmek zorunlu bir ihtiyaç olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Zira idari, mali ve askeri alanda yapılan modernleşme hareketlerinin başarıya ulaşabilmesi bir anlamda bu işleri üslenecek eğitilmiş bir bürokrasi kadrosu aracılığıyla olabilecekti. Ulema ve medrese çevrelerinin güçlü bir şekilde etkisi altında bulunan sıbyan mekteplerinden ve medreselerden umutsuz olan yönetim, çareyi daha modern eğitim yapan iptidai, rüşdiye ve idadi gibi eğitim kurumları açmakta bulmuştur. Bu çalışma ile kaza merkezindeki medreseler ile Müslüman ve gayrimüslimlere ait eğitim kurumlarının öğretmen ve öğrenci sayıları hakkında bilgiler verilmiş olup, başta arşiv belgeleri ve süreli yayınlar olmak üzere Tanzimat’tan II. Meşrutiyet’e kadar olan süreçte eğitim alanında yapılan yeniliklerin Alaşehir Kazası’ndaki yansımalarının ortaya çıkarılması amaçlanmıştır.
