PROCESS OF DESIGNING CHINA IN THE CONTEXT OF COLONIALISM BY BRITISH: FIRST OPIUM WAR

Abstract

Europe which set forth the several various stages of colonialism endavoured in order to establish a colonial empire in Far East in the 18th century. The West tried different ways to colonize China at this stage but the most important of these was the sale of opium through smuggling. This situation which would distrupt the import-export balance of a powerful empire would be a reason to accelerate the collapse of the empire. In this study I will examine the influence of the West on China within the scope of 19th century and how China was experiencing this process.

Özet

Sömürgeciliğin çeşitli merhalelerini ortaya koyan Avrupa 18. yüzyılda Uzak Doğu’da sömürge imparatorluğu kurmak adına; çeşitli yollar arama gayreti içerisine girmişti. Bu aşamada Batı, sömürgeleştirme yöntemi olarak farklı yollar denese de bunların en önemlisi kaçakçılık yoluyla Çin’e afyon satımıydı. Güçlü bir imparatorluğun ithalat-ihracat dengesini bozacak olan bu durum imparatorluğun çöküşünü hızlandıran bir neden olacaktı. Bu çalışmada 19. yüzyıl çerçevesinde batının Çin üzerindeki etkisini ve bu etki dâhilinde Çin’in nasıl bir süreç yaşadığını ele alacağım.
