When Higher Education is Infected by Covid-19: An Analysis of the Experiences of Students and Academics in Distance Learning Activities during the Pandemic

Yükseköğretime Covid-19 Bulaşınca: Salgın Sürecinde Öğrenci ve Akademisyenlerin Uzaktan Eğitim Faaliyetlerine İlişkin Deneyimleri Üzerine Bir Değerlendirme

Abstract

During the Covid-19 pandemic, many sectors, especially the education and health sector, have encountered new urgencies that they had never experienced before. One domain most affected by the pandemic has been higher education. This study aims to evaluate the distance education activities that have occurred at higher education institutions in Turkey during the pandemic. The distance education experiences of 46 academics and 115 students of 10 universities in Turkey during the pandemic were surveyed through a question form. A qualitative research method, phenomenology, was adopted and the data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. The findings show that the distance education model presents both practical difficulties and advantages. The system can be improved by considering the results obtained from the experiences and detecting the deficiencies of distance education.

Özet

Covid-19 salgını sürecinde, eğitim ve sağlık sektörü başta olmak üzere birçok sektörde daha önce deneyimlenmemiş yenilikler ile tanışılmıştır. Salgının en çok etkilediği alanlardan biri de yükseköğretim olmuştur. Araştırmada, Türkiye’deki yükseköğretim kurumlarında gerçekleşen uzaktan eğitim faaliyetlerinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Bu kapsamda, Türkiye’deki 10 ayrı üniversitede görev yapan ve salgın sürecinde uzaktan eğitim verme tecrübesi yaşamış 46 akademisyen ile uzaktan eğitim yoluyla öğrenim gören 115 öğrencinin, oluşturulan bir soru formu vasıtasıyla uzaktan eğitim tecrübeleri sorgulanmıştır. Nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden fenomenoloji deseninin benimsendiği araştırmada, elde edilen veriler içerik analizi tekniği kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Analiz sonucunda ulaşılan bulgular, uzaktan eğitim modelinin bünyesinde uygulamaya yönelik çeşitli zorluklar içermesi yanında, avantajlar da barındırdığını göstermektedir. Deneyimlenen süreçten elde edilen sonuçlar doğrultusunda, uzaktan eğitimle ilgili eksiklikler tespit edilip iyileştirmeler yapılarak sistemin daha iyi hale getirilebileceği öngörülmektedir.
