Sufism's Contribution to Islamic Civilization

Abstract

There were many civilizations established throughout history. As well as the significantcivilizations before common era, many glorious civilizations were establishedsuch as Roman Civilization which was the continuation of Greek Civilization in thefirst and middle ages in the common era, Sasanian Civilization, Chinese and IndianCivilizations. One of the magnificent civilizations which left its mark in history inthe last fourteen hundred years was hands down the Islamic Civilization. The existenceof a system of values which embraces the society and meets its spiritual needsis a must for the establishment and survival of the civilizations. Sufism takes the firstlines of these values in the Islamic Civilization. In this study, the role of Sufism in thedevelopment of the Islamic Civilization is investigated.

Tarih boyunca birçok medeniyet kurulmuştur. Milattan önce önemli medeniyetler olduğu gibi milattan sonra da ilk ve orta çağlarda Yunan Medeniyeti, onun devamı olan Roma Medeniyeti, Sasanî Medeniyeti, Çin ve Hindistan Medeniyetleri gibi parlak medeniyetler kurulmuştur. Son bin dört yüz yıla damgasını vurmuş olan muazzam medeniyetlerden birisi de hiç şüphesiz İslâm Medeniyetidir. Medeniyetlerin kurulması ve ayakta kalmasında toplumu kucaklayan ve manevi ihtiyaçları karşılayan değerler sisteminin varlığı şarttır. İslâm Medeniyyeti’nde bu değerlerin en ön saflarında tasavvuf yer alır. Bu makalede tasavvufun İslâm Medeniyeti’nin gelişmesindeki rolü anlatılmaya çalışılacaktır.
