Transformation of Urbanity in The Process of Globalization: A Study on Social, Technological and Spatial Processes

Abstract
Global city theories which have emerged mainly since the late 1980s, have focused on the role of major cities as global financial centers, headquarters of multinational companies, and areas of concentration of advanced producer and financial service industries. After a while, many separate studies began to address the process through different issues. One of these studies is the network society and informational urban studies, led by Manuel Castells, which seeks to present their conceptualization by focusing on the important social, technological and spatial transformations that globalized urbanization processes create in urban space and in metropolitan areas including urban space. Manuel Castells introduced the concept of network society in order to examine the society created by information technology based on the technological revolution in the late 20th century. Nowadays the variables that hold the power of transforming the social structure are information and communication technologies, and this process has changed the urban phenomenon more and more with the help of new information and network technologies. The aim of the study is to examine the change in point through the theory of information age and network society and to reveal the effects of this change on Turkish urbanization.

Esas olarak 1980’li yılların sonlarından itibaren ortaya çıkmaya başlayan küresel kent teorileri, büyük kentlerin birer küresel finans merkezi, çok uluslu şirketlerin genel merkezlerinin bulunduğu mekânlar ve ileri üretici ve finansal hizmet endüstrilerinin yoğunlaşma alanları olarak rollerine odaklanmış ve bir süre sonra pek çok ayrı çalışma, süreci farklı konular üzerinden ele almaya başlamıştır. Bu çalışmalardan birisi de Manuel Castells’in başını çektiği, küreselleşen kentleşme süreçlerinin, kent mekânında ve kent mekânının dâhil olduğu metropolitan bölgelerde yarattığı önemli toplumsal, teknolojik ve mekânsal dönüşümlere odaklanarak bunların kavramsallaştırmasını sunmaya çalışan ağ toplumu ve enformasyonel kent çalışmalarıdır. Temeli 20. yüzyıl sonlarında yaşanan teknolojik devrime dayanan enformasyon teknolojisinin yarattığı toplumu inceleyebilmek açısından Manuel Castells ağ toplumu kavramını ortaya atmıştır. Buna göre günümüzde toplumsal yapıyı dönüştürme gücünü elinde bulunduran değişkenler enformasyon ve iletişim teknolojileridir ve bu süreç yeni bilişim ve ağ teknolojileri aracılığıyla kent olgusunu da her geçen gün daha çok değiştirmektedir. Çalışmanın amacı, söz konusu değişimin enformasyon çağı ve ağ toplumu teorisi üzerinden incelenmesi ve Türkiye kentselliği üzerindeki etkilerinin ortaya konmasıdır.
