Abstract

Ibn Bajja, who is one of the major philosophers in Medieval Islamic philosophy, has discussed the problem of human ultimate aim with different perspectives such as human perfections, the spirituel forms and three degrees of conjunction with intelligibles. He describes the first two degrees of conjunction with intelligibles as a natural way and the last one as a divine gift. Ibn Bajja is generally considered a rational thinker. However, even though he advances in a natural and rational way, he gets close to an intellectualism which is expressed in mystical terms. In fact the tension between the natural perfection and divine perfection is a characteristic feature of Medieval thought. In this study, the limits of Ibn Bajja’s rationality and the place of his views in Medieval thought are going to be discussed
