A Humorous Letter and a Document About Aviculture: The Letter Written by Vahyi Efendi the Sheik of Balat and Send to Hasan Pasha the Governor of Bagdat

Mizahi Bir Mektup ve Kuşbazlığa Dair Bir Vesika: Balat Şeyhi Vahyî Efendi’nin Bağdat Valisi Hasan Paşa’ya Gönderdiği Mektup

Abstract

In Ottoman period, letters have a very important position and function to reveal the humour. The letter written by Vahyi Efendi the sheik of Balat and send to Hasan Pasha the governor of Bagdat can be considered as an original sample from this point of view. In this letter humour was aimed by aviculture and aviculture affected the letter’s form and theme properties. Because of this we can see that this letter doesn’t have the properties of Ottoman letter writing rules. For us, the letter’s dynamic structure based on the ‘performance’ has the great effect on this situation. On the other hand, aviculture, the letter’s connection to reality, is another import part of the letter. By this property, this letter becomes an document about aviculture

Özet

Osmanlı’da ‘mizah’ çok yönlü bir karaktere sahiptir. Zira mizah, “şaka” ve “alay” maksadıyla gerek manzum olsun gerek mensur olsun pek çok tür içerisinde kendisine yer bulabilmiştir. Bu bağlamda mektupların da mizahın ortaya çıkmasında önemli bir konuma ve işleve sahip olduğu görülmektedir. Balat Şeyhi Vahyî Efendi’nin Bağdat Valisi Hasan Paşa’ya göndermiş olduğu mektup bu açıdan özgün bir örnek olarak kabul edilebilir. Mektupta kuşbazlık üzerinden mizahın amaçlanmış olması mektubun şekil ve konu özelliklerini doğrudan etkilemiştir. Zira mektup tam anlamıyla Osmanlı’da mektubun kaidelerine uygun bir nitelik taşımamaktadır. Bize göre bu durumun ortaya çıkmasında, mektubun ‘icra’ya dönük dinamik bir yapıya hitap etmesinin tesiri büyüktür. Diğer taraftan mektubun realite ile olan bağını referans alınan bağlam kuşbazlığın teşkil etmesi ayrı bir önem taşımaktadır. Zira bu sayede mektup, kuşbazlığa dair bir vesika niteliği de kazanmıştır
