Investigation of 8th Grade Students’ Conceptual Images of Algebraic Expressions, Equations and Identities

8. Sınıf Öğrencilerinin Cebirsel İfade, Denklem ve Özdeşliklere Yönelik Kavram İmajlarının İncelenmesi

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the concept images of 8th grade studentsfor algebraic expressions, equations and identities. In this direction, the students’concept images, their explanations and the consistency of their answers to theapplication questions were investigated. The study was designed as a case studyfrom qualitative research methods. The participants of the research are 36 8thgrade students in Sakarya in 2020-2021 academic year. In order to determine theconcept images of the students, the Concept Information Form (CSF) consistingof 4 open-ended questions and the Application Form (UF) consisting of 2 samplequestions as data collection tools, were used. The obtained data were analyzedaccording to the content analysis method. In this context, the explanations of thestudents about the concepts were coded, then the themes were created and thefindings were defined and interpreted. According to this; the majority of thestudents participating in the research had difficulty in using verbal expressionswhile defining the concepts, and expressed their explanations about the conceptson mathematical operations. In addition, it was determined that the studentsmade explanations about the concept images in the applications in the examples.

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı 8. sınıf öğrencilerinin cebirsel ifade, denklem veözdeşliklere yönelik kavram imajlarının incelenmesidir. Bu doğrultudaöğrencilerin cebirsel ifade, denklem ve özdeşliklere yönelik kavram imajları, bukavramlar arasındaki ilişkilere yönelik açıklamaları ve uygulama sorularınaverdikleri yanıtların kavram imajlarıyla tutarlılığı araştırılmıştır. Çalışma nitelaraştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışması olarak tasarlanmıştır. Araştırmanınkatılımcıları 2020-2021 eğitim-öğretim yılı bahar döneminde Sakarya’da birdevlet okulunda 8. sınıfta öğrenim gören 36 öğrencidir. Veri toplama araçlarıolarak öğrencilerin kavram imajlarını belirleyebilmek için 4 açık uçlu sorudanoluşan Kavram Bilgi Formu (KBF) ve bu kavramlara yönelik 2 örnek sorudanoluşan Uygulama Formu (UF) kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen veri içerik analiziyöntemine göre incelenmiştir. Bu kapsamda öncelikle öğrencilerin kavramlarayönelik açıklamaları kodlanmış, daha sonra temalar oluşturulmuş ve elde edilenbulgular tanımlanarak yorumlanmıştır. Buna göre; araştırmaya katılanöğrencilerin çoğunluğu kavramları tanımlarken sözel ifadeler kullanmadazorlanmış, kavramlara yönelik açıklamalarını matematiksel işlemler üzerindeifade etmiştir. Ayrıca öğrencilerin örneklerdeki uygulamalarda kavramimajlarına yönelik açıklamalarda bulundukları tespit edilmiştir
