The Effects of Research and Development (R&D) Expenditures on Exports in Turkey

Abstract

R & D activities can influence macroeconomic performance positively in many ways. It also might increase the know-how of countries so lead to produce new products. Hence, new markets are opened to firms to achieve high profits. All these findings led many researchers to conduct studies to determine the effects of R & D activities on economic growth. The aim of this paper is to determine the effects of R&D expenditures on exports in Turkey. To this end, we have examined the relationship between the export volume and R&D expenditures in Turkey in the period of 2004-2017 by using Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL). Findings reveal that there is a cointegration relationship between the variables. Besides, it is found that R&D expenditures increase the export in the short and long term.

Özet

Ar-Ge faaliyetleri bir çok yönü ile makro ekonomik performansları olumlu yönde etkileyebilmektedir. Ar‐Ge faaliyetleri ülkelerin bilgi birikimini artırarak yeni ürünlerin üretilmesini ve yeni pazarlara açılarak yüksek kazançlar elde edilmesini sağlamaktadır. Tüm bu tespitler ise çoğu araştırmacıyı Ar-Ge faaliyetlerin iktisadi büyüme üzerindeki etkilerini saptamaya yönelik çalışmalar yapmaya sevk etmiştir. Bu çalışma Türkiye için Ar-Ge harcamalarının ihracat üzerindeki etkilerini tespit etmek amacıyla yürütülmüştür. Bu amaçla 2004-2017 dönemine ait değişkenler arasındaki ilişkiler Gecikmesi Dağıtılmış Otoregresif Modele (ARDL) dayalı sınır testi yardımıyla incelenmiştir. Sınır testi sonuçlarına göre değişkenler arasında uzun dönemli ilişkilerin varlığı tespit edilmiştir. Bununla birlikte Ar-Ge harcamalarının kısa ve uzun dönemde ihracatı arttırdığı yönünde bulgulara ulaşılmıştır.
