Abstract
This article, followed by a discussion on the sound changes that the word yavuz has undergone in Turkic languages as well as throughout the historical periods of Turkish, presents in a chronological order the views on the etymology of the word in question. Consequently, it attempts to propose a new etymology for the word yavuz, drawing upon the noun stem yav (<*yab), which is still extant in the present-day Turkish language and has so far remained unnoticed.
Özet
Makalede ilk olarak yavuz kelimesinin Türkçenin tarihî dönemleri ile Türk dillerinde ne gibi ses değişikliklerine uğradığı üzerinde durulmuş, kelimenin etimolojisi üzerine ileri sürülen görüşler tarihsel sırayla verilmiştir. Türk yazı dillerinde hala yaşayan ve şimdiye kadar gözden kaçan yav (< *yab) isim kökünden hareketle yavuz kelimesinin kökenine dair yeni bir etimoloji önerisi sunulmuştur.
