Evaluation of Salmonella and Shigella strains isolated from stool cultures of outpatients

Abstract

The isolation rates of Salmonella and Shigella strains from 1532 stool cultures of outpatients during June 94-May 95 were 0.4 % and 2 % respectively. Salmonella strains were S.paratyphi B (5), S.typhi (2). There were gastrointestinal symptoms in 57 % of Salmonella isolated cases but no finding in their direct microscopic examina¬tions. Shigella species were S.dysenteriae (2), S.flexneri (8), S.boydii (5), S.sonnei (15). There were gastrointestinal symptoms in 80 % of Shigella isolated cases and microscopic findings in 33 % of them. The antimicrobial suscepti¬bility tests done according to the recommendations of NCCLS M2 - A4 -1990 standard were as follows: Salmonella and Shigella isolates were susceptible to ampicillin, ampicilin + sulbactam, gentamicin, cefuroxime, ceftriaxone, chlo¬ramphenicol, ciprofloxacin. Both of the genera were resistant to tetracycline. Also Shigella species were resistant to cephalothin and trimethoprim + sulfamethoxazole.

1994 Haziran -1995 Mayıs döneminde Mikrobiyoloji Laboratuvarlarımıza dışkı kültürü için başvuran 1532 po¬liklinik hastasından % 0.4 oranında Salmonella, % 2 oranında Shigella suşları izole edilmiştir. İzole edilen Salmonel¬la serovarları Salmonella paratyphi B (5 adet), Salmonella typhi (2) idi. Salmonella izole edilen vakaların % 57'sinde gastrointestinal semptomlar mevcut iken, dışkının direkt mikroskopik incelemelerinde bulgu yoktu. İzole edilen Shigel¬la türleri Shigella dysenteriae (2), Shigella flexneri (8), Shigella boydii (5), Shigella sonnei (15) idi. Shigella izole edilen vakaların % 80'inde gastrointestinal semptomlar, % 33'ünde dışkının direkt mikroskopik bulguları mevcuttu. NCCLS M2 - A4 - 1990 standardının önerilerine uygun olarak yapılan disk difüzyon antimikrobik duyarlılık test sonuçları; Sal¬monella ve Shigella izolatları ampisilin, ampisilin + sulbaktam, gentamisin, sefuroksim, seftriakson, kloramfenikol ve siprofloksasine duyarlı; her iki cins de tetrasikline dirençli, ayrıca Shigella türleri sefalotin, trimetoprim + sulfametak-sazole (TMP + SXT) dirençli şeklindeydi.
