Comparison of local phenol application for the treatment of pilonidal sinus with surgical methods

Abstract

This study is presented in General Surgery Clinic of İZMİR Airforce Hospital beetwen 1995-1997. In this study the surgical methods are compared with the locally application of phenol which is a conservative method. A total of 294 cases were studied and 189 of which were treated surgically, 102 cases underwent Excision + Primary Closure, 54 cases underwent Excision + Limberg Flap, 33 cases underwent Excision + open treatment. The remaining 105 cases underwent locally phenol application. The results of the treatment were compared from the point of hospitalisation time and recurrance. Finally, we concluded that the surgical procedures which lowers the tissue tension are more efective than the conservative treatment methods. On the ohter hand, the local phenol application can be an alternative method because of its being economical, simplicity and not requiring anesthesia and hospitalisation.

İZMİR Hava Hastanesi Genel Cerrahi Servisinde 1995 -1997 tarihleri arasında yapılan ve 294 olguyu içeren bu çalışmada, Pilonidal sinusta uygulanan cerrahi yöntemler ile konservatif bir tedavi yöntemi olan lokal fenol uygulaması karşılaştırıldı. Çalışmaya alınan 294 olgudan cerrahi yöntemlerin uygulandığı 189 olgunun 102 sine Eksizyon (Eks)+ primer kapama (pk), 54'üne eksizyon +Limberg fleb, 33 üne Eksi/.yon + Açık bırakma (ab) uygulandı. Kalan 105 hastaya lokal fenol uygula-ması yapıldı. Tedavi sonuçları; morbitide hastanede yatış süresi ve nüks yönünden değerlendirildi. Sonuç olarak özellikle doku tansiyonunu azaltan cerrahi yöntemlerin pilonidal sinüs tedavisinde, konservatif tedaviden daha etkili olduğu ancak lokal fenol uygu-lamasının basit, kolay uygulanabilir hospitalizasyon ve anestezi gerektirmeyen daha ekonomik bir yöntem olarak alternatif bir seçenek olabileceği değerlendirildi.
