Abstract
In order to compare Giemsa, Field and acridine orange staining methods in the diagnosis of malaria, blood samples were taken from 30 patients clinically diagnosed as malaria and three thin blood smears samples were made from each of them. One sample was stained with Giemsa, one with Field and one with acridine orange for each patient and all preparations were then microscopically studied. Plasmodium vivax was detected in 28 out of 30 patients with every staining method. It is concluded that Field method is convenient for field studies with a high number of patients, acridine orange method is suitable if there is appropriate equipment, and Giemsa method is convenient in routine laboratory studies.
