Evaluation of blood cultures results in the last two-year period

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of blood cultures which were cultured in BacT/Alert hémoculture system in the Microbiology Laboratory, Pamukkale University Hospital, between July 1999 and June 2001. While no growth occured in 1602 (77%) of total 2079 blood cultures, 394 (18.9%) were growth positive, 72 (3.4%) were false-positive and 11 (0.5%) were false-negative. The contamination rate was 3.9%. Coagulase-negative staphylococi were the most frequently isolated among all pathogens (40%). The mean times for detection of microbial growth were 33 hours for standard bottles and 20 hours for FAN bottles.

Bu çalışmada, Temmuz 1999-Haziran 2001 tarihleri arasında Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Hastanesi Mikrobiyoloji Laboratuvarı'na gönderilen ve BacT/Alert kan kültür sistemi kullanılarak kültürleri yapılan kan örneklerinin sonuçlarının değerlendirilmesi amaçlandı. Bu tarihler arasında laboratuvara gönderilmiş olan 2079 kan örneğinin 1602 (%77)'inde üreme saptanmazken 72'sinde yalancı pozitiflik (%3.4), 11'inde yalancı negatiftik (%0.5) ve 394 (%19)'ünde üreme saptanmıştır. 'Kontaminasyon oranı %3.9 olarak bulunmuştur. Üreme saptanan örnekler içinde koagülaz-negatif stafilokoklar (%40) ilk sırada soyutlanmıştır. Sistemin pozitif saptama süreleri standart şişelerde ortalama 33.2 saat, FAN (kömür absorbantlı ecosorb içeren) şişelerde 20 saat olarak bulunmuştur
