The Change of the Perception of the European in the Traditional Ottoman Mentality in The Context of Vocabulary that Denotes the “Other”

Ötekini Niteleyen Sözcükler Bağlamında Geleneksel Osmanlı Zihniyetinde Avrupalı Algısının Değişimi

Abstract

Since the 15th and 16th century, the Ottoman system and mentality has begun to change along with the solvent, transformative and destructive effects of many internal and external factors. Although the change occurred more rapidly and more clearly especially in administrative, financial and military structures, it is necessary to take into account a long- term process in order to realize the change in mentality. This research aims to examine the transformation of the traditional Ottoman mentality, in the context of the 19th century, through the understanding of the “other”. For this purpose, the course of mentality change has been tried to be determined through the words that define or characterize the European, which represents the “other” in the Ottoman Empire.

Özet

Bu yazıda “geleneksel” olarak nitelenen ve XV-XVI. yüzyılları ifade eden dönem, toplumsal kurumlarının işleyişinin yanı sıra genel zihniyeti ve bu zihniyetten beslenen kolektif kimliği açısından Osmanlı’nın en yetkin dönemini teşkil etmektedir. Söz konusu dönemi takip eden zamanda dahili ve harici birçok faktörün çözücü, dönüştürücü, tahrip edici etkisiyle Osmanlı sistemi ve zihniyeti değişmeye başlar. Gerçekleşen değişim özellikle idari, mali ve askeri yapılarda daha hızlı ve belirgin gerçekleşmesine karşılık, zihniyette gerçekleşen değişimi fark edebilmek için uzun zamana yayılan bir süreci dikkate almak gerekmektedir. Bu araştırma, özellikle XVII. yüzyıl bağlamında olmak üzere geleneksel Osmanlı zihniyetinin değişim sürecini “öteki” anlayışı üzerinden inceleme amacı içerisindedir. Bu maksatla Osmanlı’nın “ötekisini” temsil eden Avrupalıyı tanımlayan veya niteleyen sözcükler üzerinden zihniyet değişiminin seyri tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır.
