Abstract
The most common type of the entrapment neuropathy of the upper extremity is carpal tunnel syndrome caused by the compression of the median nerve at the level of the wrist. It is diagnosed by the confirmation of the symptoms and signs with electromyographic studies. The symptoms and signs include paresthesia of the fingers, atrophy of the thenar eminence, weaknessof the opposition, positive Tinel and Phalen signs. Even conservative and endoscopic interventions exist, the widely used method of treatment is open surgery. 60 patients who were undergone open surgery between 2002 – 2008 in our clinics, were retrospectively evaluated. 68 wrists of these 60 patients were operated by open surgery performing carpal tunnel release and external neurolisis. We share our experiences on carpal tunnel syndromes, and review the literature.
