Jacques Brel'in gözünde ve sözünde kadınlar

Abstract

It has been said that the important poet-composer-singer Jacques Brel was a misogynist; these rumors continued during his life time as well as after his death. Was Brel really a misogynist? Did he actually hate women? In this article, this issue is studied through his interviews, his love life and his lyrics, which are more than a hundred. Besides, we have tried to find an answer to questions like “can the lyrics that Brel wrote be accepted as poems, in other words, do they posses a literary essence? In this extent, is Brel a poet?” Even though Brel deems himself a lyric writer, the technique of poetry and the metaphores that he used in creating his art manifest that his is not really far away from being a poet.
