Abstract
Suleiman the Magnificent, the tenth Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, has been a source of inspiration for many historical works and this is not due solely to the fact that the Empire thrived and enlarged its boundaries during his reign, but also because there was a woman in his life whose strength of character and indisputable influence changed the course of Ottoman history. Roxelane, referred to as Hürrem in the Sultan’s harem, has appeared at the forefront of many historical works, many a time leaving even the Sultan her shadow. In this study the researcher compares works of two authors of distinctly different cultural and historical backgrounds and thus differing views of the world -Turhan Tan (Hürrem Sultan 1937) and Catherine Clément (La Sultane 1981)- and reflects how the story of this woman is shaped in the imagery of these authors.
