Abstract

Aim: Parkinson's disease is a progressive and neurodegenerative disease accompanied by rest tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity and postural instability. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Pilates and elastic taping applications on hand functions, postural control and trunk control in early stage Parkinson's patients. Material and Methods: Patients were randomly divided into 3 groups as Pilates, elastic taping and control group. Patients were given 60-minute Pilates training twice a week for 6 weeks. In addition to Pilates training, elastic taping was applied twice a week for postural correction of the upper back in elastic taping group. Before and after the training, the patients were evaluated by Nine-Hole Peg Test (9HPT) for hand function, modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance (m-CTSIB) for postural control, and Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS) for trunk control. Results: Thirty-five patients' data were analyzed (Pilates group: 11, Elastic taping group: 12, Control group: 12). Significant difference was not found between the pretreatment (0 weeks) and post-treatment (6 weeks) values of the 9HPT results of the three groups (p> 0.05). It was seen that the results of the TIS were significantly increased at the end of the 6th week in the elastic taping group, and the mean m-CTSIB values in the eyes open and closed conditions improved significantly after 6 weeks in the Pilates group (p
