The effect of demographic factors, denture age and bite force on quality of life and patient satisfaction of complete denture wearers

Abstract

Objectives: In our country, the majority ofpeople over age 65 is determined using maxillaryand mandibular complete dentures; for this reason,the investigation of the effect of this treatment typeon patient satisfaction and life quality and the biteforces is important. The aim of this retrospectivestudy was to analyze the effect of age, gender, biteforce and age of the prosthesis on quality of life andpatient satisfaction of patients using completedentures for at least 3 years.Materials and Methods: 50 edentulous patientsusing maxillary and mandibular complete denturesfor no less than 3 years were included in this study.Bite forces were measured in all patients, andpatients were asked to complete OHIP-14 forms fordetecting life quality and Visual Analog Scale(VAS) forms for detecting patient satisfaction.Results: According to the statistical outputs ofthe study, no statistically significance was foundbetween the patient age, gender and VAS and OHIPscores (p >0.05). Statistically significant relationshipwas found between denture age and VAS speechscores in positive way, at a level of 30.8%, anddenture age and OHIP functional disability scoresin a negative way, at a level of 32.2%. Statisticallysignificant relationship was found between biteforce and VAS speech scores of the patients inpositive way, at a level of 29.6%, whereas astatistically significant relationship was not foundbetween OHIP scores(p >0.05) and bite forces. Amaç: Ülkemizde 65 yaş üstü bireylerinçoğunun alt üst tam protez kullandığı saptanmışolduğu için, bu tedavi şeklinin hasta memnuniyetive yaşam kalitesine olan etkisi ve ısırmakuvvetlerinin araştırılması önem taşımaktadır. Buretrospektif çalışmanın amacı, en az 3 senedir tamprotez kullanan hastalarda yaş, cinsiyet, ısırmakuvveti ve protez yaşının yaşam kalitesi ve hastamemnuniyeti üzerine etkisinin incelenmesidir.Gereç ve Yöntem: En az 3 yıldır protezlerinikullanmakta olan 50 dişsiz hasta bu çalışmaya dahiledilmiştir. Tüm hastaların ısırma kuvvetleriölçülmüş, ve hastalara hasta memmnuniyetleri içinVisual Analog Scale (VAS) formları, yaşamkalitesinin değerlendirilmesi için de Oral HealthImpact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) formlarıdoldurtulmuştur.Bulgular: Araştırmanın istatistiksel sonuçlarınagöre, olguların yaşları ve cinsiyetleri ile VAS veOHIP skorları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlıbir ilişki bulunmamıştır (p>0,05).
