Abstract
The relationship between religion and medicine is one of the most basic subjects of the ‘Medical Sociology of Religion’ that we can define as a sub-discipline that deals with the relation of religion with medicine, health and disease from the sociological perspective. However, it is understood that there is not enough interest in this topic in the field of sociology of religion. Looking at the historical process, it can be seen that the developments in the medical field are directly related to the secularization process. The developments experienced especially in the end of the 19th century have caused medicine to become an increasingly dominant element in social life. Through this process called ‘medicalization’, medicine has become a position that penetrates every area of the life over time. So much so that the ‘unquestionable and uncriticizable’ situation, which was once in the hands of the clergy, nowadays seems to have been devoted to medicine through physicians. This power has provided a sacred untouchableness armor for medicine, and physicians who have acted with authority from rational science have put forward the idea that the treatments they are applying are the only valid method that cannot be challenged. Such a picture can be seen as evidence that modern medicine, a secular initiative in its emergence, has a sacred identity as a natural result of the medicalization process.
