The Discussion on Writing with Pencil and Typing on Keyboard in Education

Abstract

In recent years, the impact of technology in the field of education is increasing rapidly and significant changes occur in educational tools and equipment. Students tend to use such tools as computer and tablets and therefore, typing on keyboard and keys rather than writing with pencils becomes more prominent. It is claimed that computers will become more widespread and students will stop handwriting. Based on these claims, moving from such questions as "Why students are not taught to type on keyboards and keys at school? Why they are taught to write running handwriting with pencils?" the issue of writing with pencils and typing on keyboards is in discussion. Based on these discussions, in countries such as Canada, the USA and Finland, students are taught to type on keyboard. The advantages and disadvantages of the case is still examined. Studies indicate significant differences in terms of physical processes in writing with pencils and typing on keyboard. These differences occur in hand movements, the direction of the letters, the processes of writing, the speed of writing, attention, comprehension and development of cognitive skills. Writing with pencils and on keyboard effect the development of students' language and cognitive skills. Therefore, some researchers claim that writing with pencils is useful whilst others support typing on keyboard while teaching writing. Educationalists, on the other hand, suggest that students should be taught to write with pencils as of early ages and thus, support their language, cognitive, emotional, social and physical development and then, they should be taught to type on keyboard and keys

Son yıllarda eğitim alanında teknolojinin etkisi giderek artmakta, okullarda eğitim araç ve gereçleri hızla değişmektedir. Öğrenciler bilgisayar, tablet gibi araçlara yönelmekte, böylece kalem yerine klavye ve tuşlarla yazma ön plana çıkmaktadır. Bilgisayarların giderek yayılacağı ve öğrencilerin el yazısını bırakacakları öne sürülmektedir. Bu iddialar üzerine "Neden okulda tuşlarla yazı öğretimi yapılmıyor? Niçin kalemle bitişik eğik el yazısı öğretiliyor?" gibi sorulardan hareketle kalem ve tuşlarla yazma öğretimi tartışılmaktadır. Bunların olumlu ve olumsuz yönleri incelenmektedir. Araştırmalar kalem ve tuşlarla yazmada fiziksel süreçler açısından önemli farklılıkların olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu farklılıklar el hareketleri, harflerin yönü, yazma işlem ve süreçleri, yazma hızı, dikkat, anlama ve zihinsel becerilerin gelişiminde görülmektedir. Kalem ve tuşlarla yazma öğrencilerin dil ve zihinsel becerilerinin gelişimini etkilemektedir. Bu nedenle bazı araştırmacılar kalemle bazıları da tuşlarla yazı öğretiminin yararlı olduğunu savunmaktadır. Eğitimciler ise erken yaşlardan itibaren öğrencilere kalemle yazmanın öğretilerek dil, zihinsel, duygusal, sosyal ve bedensel gelişimin desteklenmesi, ardından tuşlarla yazma çalışmalarına geçilmesini önermektedirler
