Serum haptoglobin level in patients with Hodgkin s disease and non-Hodgkin s lymphoma

Abstract

Serum levels of haptoglobin, lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and ferritin are investigated in 68 patients with malignant lymphomas. The study included 16 patients with stage IIIB Hodgkin's diseases (HD), 32 patients with stage IIIB non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL), 10 patients with complete remission Hodgkin's diseases (R-HD), 10 patients with complete remission non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (R-NHL), and 20 normal people as control group. The upper limit of "normal" in our institution has been 200 mg/dl of haptoglobin, 460 U/L of LDH and 322 ng/ml of ferritin. Serum haptoglobin level was elevated in 75% of stage IIIB HD patients, in 78,1% of stage IIIB NHL patients. Serum LDH level was elevated in 81,2 % of stage IIIB HD patients, in 84,3% of stage IIIB NHL patients-Serum ferritin level was elevated in 62,5% of stage IIIB HD patients, in 59,3 % of stage IIIB NHL patients. Serum levels of haptoglobin, LDH and ferritin were normal in R-HD patients, in R-NHL patients ,and in control groups. In this study, it is possible to conclude that the evaluation of serum haptoglobin in malignant lymphomas patients could represent an additional and useful parameter in defining the clinical and prognostic aspects of the disease.

Bu çalışmada serum haptoglobinin malign lenfomalarda prognostik değeri araştırıldı, Çalışmaya 26 Hodgkin hastalığı (HD) ve 42 Hodgkin dışı lenfoma olmak üzere malign lenfomalı 68 hasta ve kontrol grubu olarak 20 sağlıklı kişi alındı. Ann Arbor sınıflandırmasına göre hastaların 48 (16 HD, 32 HDL)'i evre IIIB' de, 20 (10 HD, 10 HDL)'si remisyonda idi. Bulunan sonuçlar serum laktik dehidrogenaz (LDH) ve ferritin seviyesi ile karşılaştırıldı, Cut off değeri haptoglobin için 200 mg/dl, LDH için 460 U/L ve ferritin için 322 ng/ml olarak kabul edildi. Evre IIIB HD grubunda serum haptoglobin seviyesi 12 (%75), serum LDH seviyesi 13 (%81,2), serum ferritin seviyesi 10 (%62,5) hastada; evre IIIB HDL grubunda serum haptoglobin seviyesi 25 (%78,1), serum LDH seviyesi 27 (%84,3), serum ferritin seviyesi 19 (%59,3) hastada cut off değerinin üstünde idi. Remisyondaki HD, HDL ve kontrol gruplarındaki kişilerin hepsinde serum haptoglobin, LDH ve ferritin seviyeleri cut off değerinin altındaydı. Bu çalışma sonucunda, serum LDH ve ferritin seviyesi gibi, serum haptoglobin seviyesinin de, malign lenfomaların takip ve tedavisinde bir prognoz kriteri olarak kullanılabileceği düşünüldü.
