Abstract
To apprehend the story which is illustrated in the art work and to deconstruct iconography of it, textual and visual sources provide essential datas. Scenes depicted in the art works stem from mythology, holy books, and history and many more sources. When it comes to Christian Art, most of the scenes consist of religious themes, and the primary source is the Canonical Bibles. However if we scrutinize it could be observed that there are a variety of sources. What is more, in some scenes there are some textual and visual sources more fundemental than the Canonic Bibles themselves. In this article to present the variety of the sources one of the most popular scenes of the Christian Art, Nativity scene is examined. Also contribution of the Apocryphal Bibles and Antique Era's art works to the formation of the scene, and contribution of the liturgical writings to the iconographic elements of the scene is discussed.
