Abstract

Mould-made bowls are a characteristic ceramic form of the Hellenistic Period. Manufactured without handle and base the exterior sides of these bowls are decorated with patterns. The typology and chronology of mould-made bowls generally follows these patterns. Studies on the actual moulds in which the bowls were formed are quite rare, and the workshops are usually named after the places where they were found. The two moulds from the Burdur Museum presented here are quite impor- tant in this aspect. They are inscribed on the exterior side with the name of the craftsman called APTEMHΣ. The same signature (APTEMEOYΣ) has been observed on moulds found at Cremna. An abbreviation of this craftsman s name with the initial letter A has been observed on two bowls from the neighbouring Pisidian city of Boubon. Besides, there are imprinted stamps on these two vessels which were made from the moulds in the Burdur Museum. Altogether these findings sup- port the assumption that APTEMHΣ was a craftsman of mould-made bowls active in Pisidia and adjacent cities. The same signature of APTEMEOYΣ appears on nearly twenty moulds in the Mainz Museum. It has been proposed that the moulds in Mainz originally came from Anatolia, but neither the place nor the region where they were found was indicated. In conclusion, it can be asserted that the moulds in Mainz originally came from Pisidia.
