Abstract

For many cultures from the Ancient Period to the present day, it was believed that God introduced the order to the chaos through geometry, and therefore geometry has been considered sacred. This discipline, which investigates the relationship between the universe and human beings, examines the common features of both the universe and nature within the framework of geometry. For this rea- son, people have assigned various religious and metaphysical meanings to the shapes (circle, square, triangle, etc.) and numbers, which are appreciated as the integral parts of geometry. Plans, drawings and ornaments based on sacred geometry, which are encountered in the architecture and art, are the best examples of this fact. Thanks to these examples, it is understood that this information had been discovered thousands of years ago. It is also estimated that the sacred geometry and number sym- bolism have an important place in the programming of structures and facades in medieval Armenian religious architecture. However, the studies and research on this subject are quite limited. Therefore, this study primarily discusses the specific meaning of geometric shapes and numbers; then, the study investigates the role of sacred geometry and symbolism of numbers in Armenian architecture, and therefore in Armenian Christian belief, by examining some architectural structures (Ani Cathedral, Surp Amenap’rkitch Church, Apughamrent Church) of the Ani Ruins.
