Abstract

Recently, the studies on the destruction products of periodontal diseases have attracted great attention and these products have gained importance as a disease indicator for the definition of the periodontal disease. LDH (Lactate Dehidrogenase) is' an intracellular enzyme which is found almost in all cells of the body, it has also been observed in saliva as it spreads to the extra cellular surrounding subsequent to cell death. For this reason, it is assumed that there may be a correlation between the LDH levels in saliva and periodontal tissue health. Similarly, several studies have been performed investigating the correlation between the calcium levels of saliva and periodontal tissue health. Hence, the present study aimes to determine the alterations in the levels of LDH and Ca in stimulated and non - stimulated saliva samples of periodontally healthy, gingivitis and periodontitis patients. 16 adult periodontitis, 12 gingivitis patients, 14 healthy subjects were chosen for this study. The age range varied between 19 and 70 years. All of the subjects were evaluated clinically with Sillness - Löe plaque index, Löe-Sillness gingival index, bleeding on probing, pocket depth and attachment level, and the results were analyzed Tbiometrically. LDH levels were observed to increase both in gingivitis and periodontitis group when compared to the healthy subjects. It was concluded that due to the tissue destruction, the periodontitis group demonstrated the most increased LDH levels compared to the other saliva samples. The results of the present study did not imply that Ça levels can be an indicator of the periodontal disease. Further investigation is needed to compare the Ca levels in the saliva samples of poredidontitis and gingivitis patients, and healthy subjects.
