Arabesque Music in Turkish Cinema: An Audience Study on the Film "Müslüm"

Türk Sinemasında Arabesk: “Müslüm” Filmi Üzerine Bir İzleyici Çalışması

Abstract

Music, which has a unifying power and universal quality, similar to the cinema, carries the traces of the society from which it was born and reunited, regardless of the kind, and finds a response in the meaning world of the individuals in that society. When it comes to Turkey, arabesque music has existed at the social level from the first examples of the 1960s to the present day, and the arabesque culture is associated with this style of music. It has also found its reflections in art branches that feed on society like cinema. Arabesque's social place and its importance and its point of view to arabesque culture and music from social perspective make it important to be revealed by the movie named Müslüm (Ketche & Can Ulkay, 2018), which is based on the life story of Müslüm Gürses who is one of the important names in arabesque music, why it is watched, how it is read and at what points and in what way it is satisfied by the audience. In this context, the scope of this study was to understand why / for what purpose viewers watched the movie of Müslüm and how they read and interpreted it, we collected data from 200 viewers who have different demographic characteristics through an online questionnaire by snowball sampling. The study is theoretically based on the uses and gratifications approach, and the data obtained from the audience of Müslüm movie were analyzed within the framework of the categorization in McQuail's (2010). As a result of the investigations made, it has been observed that the majority of the viewers assume that they have an active audience role in the process of reading the movie. In addition, although there are similarities at some points in meeting the expectations of the audience, it is seen that social origins are determinant in individual differences and observed that some unforeseen effects have occurred

Sinemaya benzer olarak birleştirici bir gücü veevrensel niteliği olan müzik, tür fark etmeksiziniçerisinden doğduğu ve tekrar buluştuğu toplumunizlerini taşır ve o toplumdaki bireylerin anlamdünyasında karşılık bulur. Türkiye söz konusuolduğunda 1960'lardaki ilk örneklerinden günümüzekadar toplumsal düzlemde var olan arabesk müzik vebu müzik tarzıyla ilişkilendirilen arabesk kültür sinemagibi toplumdan beslenen sanat dallarında dayansımalarını bulmuştur. Arabeskin toplumsal yeri veönemi ile toplumsal açıdan arabesk kültür ve müziğebakış açısı arabesk müziğin önemli isimlerinden birisiolan Müslüm Gürses'in hayat hikâyesinden temellenenMüslüm (Ketche & Can Ulkay, 2018) adlı filminizleyici tarafından neden izlendiğinin, nasılokunduğunun ve izleyiciyi hangi noktalarda, neşekilde tatmin ettiğinin ortaya konulmasını önemlikılmaktadır. Bu çerçevede çalışma kapsamındaMüslüm adlı filmi izleyicilerin neden/hangi amaçlaizledikleri ile nasıl okuyup yorumladıklarını anlamakamacıyla farklı demografik özelliklere sahip kartopuörneklem yoluyla ulaşılan 200 izleyiciden çevrimiçianket yoluyla veri toplanmıştır. Çalışma kuramsalaçıdan kullanımlar ve doyumlar yaklaşımındantemellenmekte ve McQuail'in (2010) kategorizasyonuçerçevesinde izleyicilerden elde edilen veriler analizedilmektedir. Analiz sonucunda izleyicilerin büyükçoğunluğunun filmi okuma sürecinde aktif izleyici rolüüstlendikleri görülmüştür. Ayrıca izleyiciler açısındanbeklentilerin karşılanmasında kimi noktalardabenzerlik görülmekle birlikte, bireysel farklılıklardasosyal kökenlerin belirleyici olduğu ve ayrıcaöngörülmeyen kimi etkilerin ortaya çıktığıgörülmektedi
