Urfa in National Struggle with Memories

Abstract

British people occupied Urfa as many other Anatolian provinces illegally depending on Armistice of Moudros which ended the First World War. The British occupation of Urfa was soon replaced by the French occupation. The people of Urfa never adopted the management approach of the invaders and gave great support to the Kuvayi Milliye against these invasions. Thus the people of Urfa engaged in a great struggle for freedom against the French, who were superior in the maintenance of arms and military equipment. The city dwellers and villagers united to take control of a certain area of the city. The city was then surrounded, and the French logistic support channels were cut off. In the presence of such a struggle, the French did not have the strength to continue the war for a long time. The French, who remained on the defensive, began to expect military aid but this military aid did not come. There was no way left for the French to save their lives but to withdraw from the city. So faith and courage prevailed in the face of power. The liberation of Urfa from occupation brought great self-confidence to the national struggle. Commender Ali Rıza Bey, Hacı Mustafa Efendi, Nusret Bey, and Lieutenant Ali Saip Bey had great efforts in this success.

İngilizler I. Dünya Savaşını sona erdiren Mondros Ateşkes Antlaşmasına dayanarak hukuksuz bir şekilde Anadolu'nun pek çok vilayeti gibi Urfa'yı da işgal ettiler. Urfa'daki İngiliz işgali kısa sürede yerini Fransız işgaline bıraktı. Urfalılar, işgalcilerin yönetim anlayışını hiçbir zaman benimsemediler ve bu işgallere karşı Kuva-yı Milliye'ye büyük destek verdiler. Böylece Urfalılar silah ve askeri teçhizat bakımında üstün olan Fransızlara karşı büyük bir özgürlük mücadelesine giriştiler. Şehirlisi, köylüsü ve aşiretleriyle halk, birleşerek şehrin belirli bir bölgesini kontrol altına aldı. Ardından şehrin etrafı kuşatılarak Fransızların lojistik destek kanalları kesildi. Fransızlar böyle bir mücadele karşısında uzun bir süre savaşa devam edebilecek güç ve imkâna sahip değillerdi. Savunmada kalan Fransızlar, askeri yardım beklemeye başladılar fakat bu askeri yardım gelmedi. Fransızlara canlarını kurtarmak için şehirden çekilmekten başka yol kalmadı. Böylece gücün karşısında inanç ve cesaret galip geldi. Urfa'nın işgalden kurtarılması, Millî Mücadele- ye büyük bir moral ve özgüven kazandırdı. Urfa halkıyla bütünleşen Bnb. Ali Rıza Bey, Hacı Mustafa Efendi, Nusret Bey ve Yzb. Ali Saip Bey'in bu başarıda büyük emekleri oldu.
