The Effect of Entrepreneurship and Innovation on the Academic Performance of Universities

Giriflimcilik ve Yenilikçiliğin Üniversitelerin Akademik Performans› Üzerindeki Etkisi

Abstract

The aim of the study is to examine the effect of entrepreneurship and innovation on universities’ academic performance. For this purpose, we used panel data obtained from the universities included on the Entrepreneurial and Innovative University Index for the 2012-2017 peri- od. The data were obtained from the TÜB‹TAK index and URAP. The data obtained were analyzed using the panel regression method. The results show that entrepreneurial and innovative universities have higher academic success. Also, scientific and technological research competence, cooperation and interaction, and economic contribution and commer- cialization have a significant positive effect on universities’ performance. However, the intellectual property dimension of entrepreneurship and innovation significantly and negatively affect universities’ academic per- formance. The entrepreneurship and innovation culture dimension, on the other hand, has no significant effect on universities’ performance. The study aims to contribute to the academic literature as a pioneering study that addresses the effect of entrepreneurship on the academic per- formance of universities. In addition, it is an important study since it shows that universities should add entrepreneurship to their educational and researcher identities while making their choices in positioning them- selves among others.

Çal›flman›n amac› giriflimcilik ve yenilikçili¤in üniversitelerin perfor- manslar› üzerindeki etkisinin incelenmesidir. Bu amaçla çal›flmada, Giri- flimci ve Yenilikçi Üniversite Endeks (GYÜE) s›ralamas›nda yer alan üni- versitelerin 2012–2017 y›llar›na ait panel veri seti kullan›lm›flt›r. Bu kap- samda giriflimcilik verileri TÜB‹TAK-GYÜE, akademik performans ve- rileri ise URAP raporlar›ndan elde edilmifltir. Elde edilen veriler panel regresyon yönetimi ile analiz edilmifltir. Araflt›rma sonuçlar› giriflimci ve yenilikçi üniversitelerin akademik baflar›lar›n›n daha yüksek oldu¤una ka- n›t sa¤lamaktad›r. Bununla birlikte giriflimcilik ve yenilikçili¤in bilimsel ve teknolojik araflt›rma yetkinli¤i, ifl birli¤i ve etkileflim ile ekonomik kat- k› ve ticarileflme boyutlar›n›n üniversitelerin akademik performans›n› olumlu ve anlaml› yönde etkiledi¤i görülmektedir. Fakat giriflimcilik ve yenilikçili¤in fikri mülkiyet havuzu boyutunun negatif ve anlaml› bir et- kisi tespit edilmifltir. Giriflimcilik ve yenilikçilik kültürünün ise üniversi- telerin akademik performans› üzerinde etkisi tespit edilememifltir. Çal›fl- ma giriflimcili¤in üniversitelerin akademik performans› üzerindeki etkisi- ni ele alan öncü bir çal›flma olarak akademik alanyaz›na katk› sunmakta- d›r. Ayr›ca üniversitelerin konum tercihlerini yaparken e¤itim-ö¤retim ve araflt›rmac› kimliklerinin yan›na giriflimcili¤i de eklemeleri gereklili¤ini ortaya koymas› aç›s›ndan önemli bir çal›flmad›r.
