TESTING OF THE ARBITRAGE PRICING THEORY WITH FACTOR ANALYSIS IN THE ISTANBUL STOCK EXCHANGE: AN APPLICATION FOR BIST 30 INDEX

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to test the validity of Arbitrage Pricing Theory in Turkey capital market. For this purpose, It is performed in the analysis using monthly returns of stocks of companies located in BIST 30 index of between 2010-2014. In the first stage, factors scores are calculated using factor analysis for 60 monthly returns of 30 stocks located in the index in the mentioned period. In the second stage, It is obtained factor betas and solved regression models where the monthly returns as the dependent variable and factor scores as the independent variable. Risk premiums are calculated on the last stage. According to the result obtained from the analysis, it is determined the absence of multiple systematic risk factors affecting stock returns. The results prove that Arbitrage Pricing Theory is invalid in the Istanbul Stock Exchange in 2010-2014

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı Arbitraj Fiyatlama Teorisi'nin Türkiye sermaye piyasasında geçerliliğinin test edilmesidir. Bu amaçla BIST 30 endeksinde yer alan firmaların hisse senetlerinin 2010-2014 yılları arasındaki aylık getirileri kullanılarak analiz yapılmıştır. İlk aşamada Endekste yer alan 30 hisse senedinin söz konusu döneme ait 60 aylık getirileri için faktör analizi yardımıyla faktör skorları hesaplanmıştır. İkinci aşamada faktör skorlarının bağımsız, aylık getirilerin bağımlı değişken olarak yer aldığı regresyon modelleri çözülmüş ve faktör betaları elde edilmiştir. Son aşamada risk primleri hesaplanmıştır. Analizden elde edilen sonuca göre hisse senedi getirilerini etkileyen birden fazla sistematik risk faktörünün bulunmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Bu sonuç, Borsa İstanbul'da 2010-2014 yılları arasında Arbitraj Fiyatlama Teorisi'nin geçerli olmadığını göstermektedir
