The Effect of Creative Drama Activities in the Museum on the Success of the Students in the Social Studies Class

Müzede Yaratıcı Drama Etkinliklerinin Öğrencilerin Sosyal Bilgiler Dersindeki Başarısına Etkisi

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the effects of creative drama method in the museum on social studies course success of the students. The mixed model which includes both qualitative and quantitative research methods was used in this study. Study group of the research consists of fourth grade primary school students who are between 10 and 11. This study was conducted with a total of 44 students, 22 in the control group and 22 in the experimental group. The implementation was carried out in Şehit Mehmet Altanlar Primary School, Ankara Ethnography Museum and War of Independence Museum. The “Achievement Test”, developed by the researcher, was conducted in order to determine the effect of the independent variable creative drama method on the success of the students in the research most of which was carried out in the museum. In the study, pre-test – post-test control (ÖSKD) group design was used from real experimental designs. Qualitative data were obtained from the “Observation Form”, “Evaluation Writings” and “Diaries”. The difference between the success levels of the experimental and control groups was tested with the “t test”. In the qualitative study, study was made into a common data set. The generated common data set was analyzed descriptively. “Student Opinions Related to Affective Characteristics” and “Student Opinions Related to Learning” were collected and interpreted with two themes. It was determined that the creative drama studies conducted in the experimental group in the museum was more effective in increasing the achievement of the students than the control group which had worked with the narrative technique based on the data obtained from the research according to the results of the “Achievement Test” used as pre-test and post-test. Concepts such as creative drama activities had been found effective during the learning period when students’ opinions were examined. According to these results, using creative drama activities in the museum has significantly increased the success. The results from qualitative data support the results of the quantitative data as well.

Bu araştırma, müzede yaratıcı drama yönteminin sosyal bilgiler dersindeki öğrencilerin başarısına etkisini ortaya koymayı amaçlamıştır. Araştırmada nicel ve nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden oluşan karma model kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu, 1011 yaş aralığında olan ilkokul dördüncü sınıf öğrencileridir. Çalışma deney grubunda 22, kontrol grubunda 22 öğrenci olmak üzere toplam 44 öğrenci ile yürütülmüştür. Çalışmanın uygulaması Şehit Mehmet Altanlar İlkokulu, Ankara Etnografya Müzesi ve Kurtuluş Savaşı Müzesi’nde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmada bağımsız değişken olan yaratıcı drama yönteminin öğrencilerin başarısı üzerindeki etkisini saptamak için araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen “Başarı Testi” uygulanmıştır. Gerçek deneysel desenlerden ön test-son test kontrol (ÖSKD) gruplu desen kullanılmıştır. Deney ve kontrol gruplarının başarı düzeyleri arasında fark bulunup bulunmadığı “t testi” ile test edilirken, araştırmanın nitel boyutunda “Görüş Alma Formu, Değerlendirme Yazıları ve Günlükler”den elde edilen nitel veriler ortak bir veri seti haline getirilmiş ve betimsel olarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgulara göre ön test ve son test olarak kullanılan “Başarı Testi” sonuçlarına göre öğrencilerin başarılarını artırmada deney grubu ile müzede yapılan yaratıcı drama çalışmalarının kontrol grubuyla müzede yapılan klasik anlatıma dayalı çalışmalara göre daha etkili olduğu belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin görüşleri incelendiğinde yaratıcı drama etkinliklerinin ünitede verilmek istenen kavram, olgu vb. ögelerin öğrenilmesinde etkili olduğu ve nitel verilerden çıkan sonuçların da nicel verileri destekler nitelikte olduğu görülmüştür. Bu sonuçlara göre yaratıcı drama etkinliklerinin müzede uygulanmasının başarıyı anlamlı derecede artırdığı söylenebilir.
