Abstract
The hiatus of inquiry is a quality of expression in the subjunctive mood of ilmu ma'ani. The catalogue of prepositions of inquiry used in the Qur'an is very rich. Main function of the prepositions of inquiry is to ask questions. However, Qur'an makes a rather literary use of these prepositions to better express the fine details of the meanings of nefy, inkar, tevbih, ta'dhim, tahkir, istibta, ta'ajjub, taswiyah, temenni, and teshwik. Qur'an employs this hiatus of inquiry especially for its ability of creating a richer and more effective expression. This article will aim to determine the meanings conveyed by the hiatus of inquiry in the Qur'an.
