Abstract
The Levant is a term related to the Eastern Mediterranean region. It is equivalent to the historical region included present-day Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Palestine and most of Turkey south-east of the Euphrates. The term derives from the Italian Levante, meaning “rising” to imply the Sun rising in the east. The name Levant States was even used to refer to the French mandate over Syria and Lebanon after World War I. Today, the word Levant is used as a scientific concept, referring to the prehistoric and Antiquity periods. Politically, it has a meaning like the crossroads of West Asia, Southern Mediterranean and North Africa. Establishing the first multi-ethnic and multi-civilized state in classical historical periods, the Persians became the first sovereigns of the entire Levant basin and ruled for two centuries. Alexander and Hellenistic kingdoms followed. An army under the Macedonian King Alexander the Great conquered the Levant (333-332 BC). Alexander did not live long enough to consolidate his realm. After his death in 323 BC the greater share of the east eventually went to the descendants of Seleucus I Nicator. The longest period of rule was the eastern Romans, known as Byzantine and continued until the Arab armies captured the area. The feature of the region as a political competition area has continued until today, and the imperialist hegemony efforts of non-regional actors in the last three centuries have determined the fate of the Levant and Cyprus, which is at its heart.
