A Gossypiboma (Textiloma) Mimicking a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor: A Case Report

Abstract

Gossypiboma (textiloma) is a rare but preventable complication occurring due to oblivion of the surgical material during an operation that carries important diagnostic difficulties as well as high morbidity and mortality risks. The actual incidence is unknown because of its medicolegal aspects. Our case is a 36-yeas-old female patient, who had a caesarean section two years ago in another center. Clinical examination and radiological investigations gave the impression of "gastrointestinal stromal tumor" and the surgically taken out mass was sent to our pathology department. The case was reported as a "gossypiboma"' and presented here to emphasize the diagnostic difficulties in the preoperative period, the life-threatening nature of the condition and as well as the rarity of the reported cases.

Özet

Gossypiboma (Tekstiloma), operasyon sırasında cerrahi malzeme unutulmasına bağlı olarak gelişen, nadir, önlenebilir, ancak ayırıcı tanı güçlüğü yaratan ve ciddi morbidite, mortalite riski taşıyan bir komplikasyondur. mediko-legal bir problem olması nedeniyle gerçek sıklığı bilinmemektedir. Bizim olgumuz 36 yaşında kadın hasta olup, iki yıl önce dış merkezde sezeryan operasyonu öyküsü vardır. Klinik muayene ve radyolojik incelemelerde "gastrointestinal stromal tümör" düşünülmüş ve kitle çıkarılarak patoloji laboratuvarımıza gönderilmiştir. Olgu 'gossypiboma' olarak rapor edilmiştir. Bu olgu, preoperatif ayırıcı tanı güçlüğü yaratması, gerçek sıklığı bilinmemesine karşın rapor edilen olgu sayısının az olması ve hastada yaşamı tehdit eden bir problem olması nedeniyle sunulmaya değer bulunmuştur.
