Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of penetrating keratoplasty in the pediatric age group. Method: Records of 17 eyes of 12 patients who had undergone penetrating keratoplasty at 14 years of age or younger betweeen February 1994 and January 2004, were reviewed retrospectively. Results: In total, 19 penetrating keratoplasties were performed on 17 eyes of 12 children. Mean age was 5.98 years (5 months to 14 years). Mean follow-up time was 21.71 ±18.47 months (6 to 75). Seven patients underwent unilateral, 5 patients underwent bilateral penetrating keratoplasty. 10 (58.82%) eyes had congenital corneal opacity, 7 eyes (41.18%) had acquired corneal opacity. Ten out of 17 eyes (58.82%) retained graft clarity. Conclusion: Although anatomic success can be achieved, amblyopia seems to be the major concern for the complete success after penetrating keratoplasty in children.

Özet

Amaç: Çocuk yaş grubunda yapılan penetran keratoplastilerin sonuçlarının değerlendirilmesi. Metod: Şubat 1994-Ocak 2004 tarihlerinde parsiyel penetran keratoplasti uygulanmış 14 yaş ve altı 12 olgunun 17 gözü retrospektif olarak değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Oniki olgunun 17 gözüne toplam 19 keratoplasti uygulandı. Ortalama yaş 5.98 yıl (5 ay-14 yıl) idi. Ortalama takip süresi 21.71±18.47 ay (6-75) olarak saptandı. Olguların 7'sine unilateral, 5'ine bilateral keratoplasti uygulandı. 10 (%58.82) gözde konjenital kornea opasitesi, 7 gözde (%41.18) akkiz kornea patolojisi bulunmaktaydı. Onyedi gözün 10'unda (%58.82) greft saydam kaldı. Sonuç: Çocukluk yaş döneminde keratoplasti sonrası anatomik başarı sağlanabilse de ambliyopi, tam başarının elde edilmesinde önemli problem olarak gözükmektedir.
