Abstract

Craniosynostosis is the closure of one or more of the skull sutures before the normal process. The clinical findings of the presence of skull sutures and the consequences of calvarial bone deformities have been recognized since antiquity, but modern surgical treatment methods have only been used in the last century. The first data on craniosynostosis surgery is related to strip craniectomy and suturectomy. In the cases where these treatment methods are inadequate, large calvarial reconstruction surgeries have been defined since the 1950s. Complications related to these surgeries were also defined over time and endoscopic craniosynostosis surgeries have been performed since the 1990s. In this review, the history of craniosynostosis as a pathological condition and the history of surgical treatments are briefly summarized
