Susceptibility of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains to widely used antibiotics in the treatment

Abstract
The worldwide increase of resistance to penicillin and other widely used antibiotics prefered in the treatment of S. pneumoniae infections has become a serious problem within the last 20 years. Antimicrobial resistance of 78 S. pneumoniae strains, which isolated from clinical samples between June 2004 and May 2005, to penicillin, erythromycin, azithromycin, trimethoprim- sulfamethoxazole, cefotaxime, cefuroxime, doxycycline, ofloxacin and levofloxacin were determined by E test method (AB-Biodisk, Sweeden). The rates of penicilin resistance and intermediate resistance of strains were 7.7% and 21.8% respectively. The highest resistance rates was detected for trimethoprim-sulfametaxazole (28.2%), azithromycin (16.7%) and erythromycin (14.1%). All penicillin resistant isolates and 82.4% of the penicillin intermediate resistant isolates were resistant to at least two antibiotics.

Son yirmi yılda, Streptococcus pneumoniae infeksiyonlarının tedavisinde tercih edilen penisilin ve sık kullanılan diğer antimikrobiyallere karşı direncin artması tüm dünyada önemli bir problem haline gelmiştir. Çalışmamızda Haziran 2004 - Mayıs 2005 tarihleri arasında izole edilen 78 adet S. pneumoniae suşunun penisilin, eritromisin, azitromisin, trimetoprim-sulfametoksazol, sefotaksim, sefuroksim, doksisiklin, ofloksasin ve levofloksasine karşı duyarlılıkları E test yöntemiyle (AB-Biodisk, Sweeden) değerlendirilmiştir. Penisiline orta dirençli ve dirençli suşların oranı sırasıyla %21.8 ve %7.7 olarak bulunmuştur. En yüksek direnç oranları trimetoprim-sulfametoksazol (%28.2), azitromisin (%16.7) ve eritromisine (% 14.1) karşı görülmüştür. Penisilin dirençli suşların tamamının ve orta dirençli suşların %82.4'ünün en az iki antibiyotiğe dirençli olduğu tespit edilmiştir.
