Abstract
Objective: Use of components derived from plant extracts is rapidly increasing today, especially in the pharmaceutical industry. In this study it is aimed to investigate the antimicrobial and antifungal effects of extracts of medicinal and aromatic plants such as lavender (Lavandula stoechas), sage tea (Salvia officinalis), thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla). Material and Methods: Antibacterial and antifungal activities of extracts of these plants against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus [ATCC 29213]), gram-negative (Escherichia coli [ATCC 25922]) bacteria and yeasts as Candida krusei (ATCC 6258), and Candida parapsilosis (ATCC 22019). They were compared with vancomycin, cefepime, levofloxacin as for antibacterial, and with fluconazole as for antifungal agents. Results: In our study, it was found that especially the extract of the plant of the S. officinalis has activity against strains of both gram (+) and gram (-) bacteria and yeasts. Conclusion: All of the plant extracts used in the study were found to be effective against S. aureus strains, while lavender (L. stoechas) and chammomile (M. chamomilla) plants were the most effective and thyme (T. vulgaris) plant was the least. Likewise, all of these extracts were found to be effective against E. coli, and M. chamomilla the highest; and T. vulgaris plant, sage tea (S. officinalis) and L. stoechas plants were found to be less effective in decreasing order. Of the plant extracts, only S. officinalis plant extract was effective against C. krusei, whereas all of them were determined to be effective against C. parapsilosis.
