Abstract
This study will try to identify the source of the ex¬pression of "well-witch" that we come across in a television serial and within this context, we shall examine and explain the word "well" through our classical poetry on the basis of texts. The word "well" was a motive very often used in classical poetry. Those who are familiar with this poetry will recall the rumors and expression with their metaphoricalconnotations as in the story of the two angels, Harut and Marut, who were to be executed head down until the doomsday in a well near Babel by God for having taught magic to human beings; the story of Yusuf and Züleyha originating from the Quran has the plot of a classical story where Yusuf is thrown into a well by his brothers because of their jealousy; however, he is later saved but ends up in a dungeon in Egypt; one of the heroes of Şehname, Bijen, who is imprisoned in a well and later saved by Zal's son Rüstem; and the well of Nahşeb from which an artificial moon rises in a town currently known as Karşı. We come across this motif in folk literature and folk culture. In this study we shall exam¬ine certain works of classical literature to give examples related to this theme.
