The genre of memoir according to Tanzimat authors

Abstract

The acceptance of memoir as a genre in Turkish literature begins with the Tanzimat period. The authors of the Tanzimat help in defining the memoir as a genre by comprehending the genres and writing about it. By doing this, they intersect with other genres such as history, autobiography, biography, diary and letters. In this article while we will be focusing on how Tanzimat writers describe the genre of memoir, we will try to compare memoir with the other genres. Thus, the attitude and perception of the writers about the genre of memoir and interrelations among the genres will be disclosed.

Özet

Türk edebiyatında hatıratın bir tür olarak kabul edilmesi Tanzimat dönemiyle başlar. Tanzimat yazarları gerek türü tanımlamaya çalışarak gerek eserleriyle bunun için zemin hazırlarlar. Tanzimat yazarları türü tanımlarken tarih, otobiyografi, biyografi, günlük ve mektup gibi diğer komşu türlerin alanına girerler. Bu makalede hatırat türünün Tanzimat yazarları tarafından yapılan tanımları üzerinde durulurken, türü komşu türlerle karşılaştırmak esas alınacaktır. Böylece Tanzimat yazarlarının tür karşısındaki tavrı, türü nasıl algıladığı, otobiyografi, biyografi, günlük gibi komşu türlerle ne derecelerde iç içe bulunduğu anlaşılacak ve bu komşu türlerin alanlarına ne derecelerde girdiği ortaya çıkacaktır.
