The Turkish Translations of La Dame aux Camélias and Related Writings

Abstract

In every period of the history, fields of science and art and wold of thought have been supported by translation. In the second half of the nineteenth century, when the Turkish literature was looking for a new direction, translation activity was of importance. The novel La Dame aux Camélias written by Alexandre Dumas Fils, one of the leading authors of Romantic Literature, is among the first novels translated into Turkish literature. The novel was translated by Ahmet Mithat Efendi, M. Vasıf, Mustafa Nihat Özön, Mithat Cemal Kuntay, Zahir Güvemli, Reşat Nuri Güntekin, Tahsin Yücel, respectively. The novel was later adapted to the theatre by the author. This play was also translated by Mahmut Şevket Paşa and Kemal Ragıp. As the translation of La Dame aux Camélias were published and the play La Dame aux Camélias was performed, critics evaluated both genres in terms of “content”. They did not pay attention to the technical features of the novel and theatre.

Toplumun her döneminde bilim, sanat ve fikir alanları tercümeyle desteklenmiştir. Türk edebiyatının kendine yeni bir yön aradığı 19. yy’ınikinci yarısında tercüme faaliyeti önem arz eder. Romantik edebiyatın öndegelen yazarlarından Alexandre Dumas Fils’nin La Dame aux Camélias romanı, Türk edebiyatında tercüme edilen ilk romanlar arasında yer alır. Eser sırasıyla Ahmet Mithat Efendi, M. Vasıf, Mustafa Nihat Özön, Mithat CemalKuntay, Zahir Güvemli, Reşat Nuri Güntekin, Tahsin Yücel tarafından tercüme edilmiştir. Roman daha sonra yazarı tarafından tiyatroya adapte edilmiştir.Bu tiyatro oyunu da Mahmut Şevket Paşa ve Kemal Ragıp tarafından çevrilmiştir. La Dame aux Camélias’nın roman tercümeleri yayımlandıkça ve LaDame aux Camélias sahnelendikçe eleştirmenler her iki türü “muhteva” açısından değerlendirmişlerdir. Roman ve tiyatronun teknik özelliklerine dikkat etmemişlerdir.
