The Geography of Migration in Ahmet Mithat Efendi’s Novels: From the Freedom to the Exile “Caucasia”

AHMET MİTHAT EFENDİ’NİN ROMANLARINDA GÖÇ COĞRAFYASI: ÖZGÜRLÜKTEN SÜRGÜNLÜĞE “KAFKASYA”

Abstract

Throughout history, the struggle for dominance among the great states on the Caucasus has never diminished. Ahmet Mithat Efendi (1844-1912), a writer of the Tanzimat period, presents the appearance of this struggle in the 19th century in some of his works around the migration phenomenon. The purpose of this study is to expose the historical, political, human, cultural, ethnic and economic aspects of the immigration phenomenon of the author’s novels along with their geographical extensions. In this framework, the phenomenon of migration through the novels of Kafkas (1878) and Gürcü Kızı Yahut İntikam (1888) about the Caucasia by Ahmet Mithat Efendi were examined around a problem of restlessness and displacement and a story of freedom-exile in the Caucasus geography with its political, economic and cultural fronts.

Özet

Tarih boyunca Kafkasya üzerinde büyük devletlerarasındakihâkimiyet mücadelesinin hiç eksilmediği görülür. Tanzimat dönemi yazarlarından Ahmet Mithat Efendi de bazı eserlerinde bu mücadelenin 19.yüzyıldaki görünümüne göç olgusu etrafında okuru tanık kılar. Kafkasya’nın tarih boyunca büyük devletlerin dikkatini çeken bir coğrafyada olduğu bilinciyle konuya yaklaşan yazarın romanlarındaki göç olgusunun,coğrafi uzantılarıyla beraber tarihî, siyasi, beşerî, kültürel, etnik ve ekonomik yönünün açığa çıkarılması bu çalışmanın amaçları arasındadır. Buçerçevede çalışmada Ahmet Mithat Efendi’nin (1844-1912) Kafkasya’yıkonu alan Kafkas (1878) ve Gürcü Kızı Yahut İntikam (1888) romanlarıüzerinden göç olgusu, bir huzursuzluk ve yer değiştirme problemi etrafında incelenmiş, asırlar ötesinden yurt edinilen Kafkas coğrafyasındaki özgürlük-sürgünlük öyküsü, tarihî, siyasi, ekonomik ve kültürel cepheleriyleortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır.
